Chemical Reactions

Activities:

  1. Bouncing Eggs
  2. Lollipop RedOx
  3. Internal Engine combustion
  4. Does it precipitate?

Conceptual Understandings: “The whole is more than the sum of its individual parts” (Aristotle)

Learning Objectives:

Atoms of different elements combine in fixed ratios to form compounds, which have different properties from their component elements. Elements and/or compounds can react with each other when specific conditions are met.

The “driving force” for a chemical reaction must be (at least) one of the following:

  • Formation of solid
  • Formation of water
  • Color change
  • Formation of gas

Vocabulary:

  • Elements
  • Compounds
  • Mixture
  • Precipitate/precipitation
  • Crystallisation
  • Solution
  • Saturated/unsaturated solution
  • Chemical Reaction
  • Reactants/Products
  • Conservation of mass
